Youth Gladness; Abuse Me Not
Crocuses have been cultivated for centuries and were even grown in the Sultan's garden in what was once Constantinople. Acording to lore, Crocus is the name of a Greek youth who captured the eye of a nymph named Smilax. He rejected Smilax so Aphrodite, the goddess of love, changed him into a crocus and turned Smilax into a bindweed (offering a not-so-subtle warning). Youthful galdness is emitted from the marvelous blooms of spring, but the second meaning refers to the autumn crocus, a flower that usually blooms in the fall. These blossoms send a message that one year's constancy might not turn into two.
